About Dr. Wettstein

Michael Wettstein, MD, is an interventional pain medicine specialist at Central Oregon Spine and Sports in Bend, Oregon. Dr. Wettstein has been board certified in anesthesiology and is board-eligible in pain medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He specializes in treatment of chronic pain with emphasis on non-opioid modalities.

After earning his medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1997, he completed anesthesiology residency training at Loma Linda University Medical Center in 2001. Immediately after, he and his family moved to Central Oregon where he practiced anesthesiology until 2011. He completed a multidisciplinary pain medicine fellowship at Loma Linda University Medical Center in 2019.

Dr. Wettstein joined Central Oregon Spine and Sports in July 2019. He utilizes medical management, interventional pain medicine techniques, including injections, radiofrequency nerve ablations, spinal cord stimulation, and dorsal root ganglion stimulation to treat pain compassionately and progressively. He also utilizes platelet rich plasma (PRP) to treat several painful conditions.

His passion for pain medicine comes, in part, from his own experience of injury and pain. In 2002, Dr. Wettstein was enjoying a weekend afternoon skateboarding with his 6-year old son when he sustained a traumatic elbow injury. After several surgeries, he was able to return to anesthesiology for nearly a decade. However, he eventually had to retire due to elbow arthritis that interfered with the physical tasks of anesthesiology. During his own journey to healing he experienced the competence and caring interventions of his own physicians. Ultimately, they inspired him to pursue a career in pain management.

When he’s not working, Dr. Wettstein enjoys spending time with his wife, 3 children, and their families. He is an avid hiker and relishes the view from atop Bachelor, South Sister, and Broken Top. He also enjoys fly fishing, cycling, and car restoration.
